Forgiving (My Mother)

  • The Glitch 134 Lower Marsh London, England, SE1 7AE United Kingdom (map)
Two young girls in a black and white photograph pose for a picture in a rural setting. Next to them a photograph of a mother holding her baby, the mother's face is blurred out. To images are stitched together by a white thread.

Forgiving (My Mother) is a thought-provoking exploration of what constitutes meaningful theater and how determinism might be the only way forward for us as a society. Emilia and Pat are writing a play about siblings who are tangled in the profound dilemma of whether to forgive their mother. This deeply human story provides a relatable entry point for exploring the concept of determinism, where characters' choices are recognised as products of a vast network of cause and effect rather than expressions of free will. What makes this production distinctive is its fusion of intricate philosophical ideas with a relatable, emotionally charged narrative topped with direct interaction with the audience. It invites the observers to reconsider their beliefs about agency, forgiveness, and the meaning of actions in a world where determinism is considered by addressing their own presence at the show.
