Being part of a writers' room is something we associate with a US TV screenwriting career. But it's becoming more and more common here in the UK.
Join us for the first of our first Overexposed live dialogue as we bring two talented UK writers working as staff writers on some of the UK's most exciting shows to the stage to answer some questions about their careers and work.
Daniel Marc Janes is a staff writer on The Crown, and is currently writing an episode for the final season. He has several original projects in development, and the short films that he's created as a writer-director have been screened at BAFTA-qualifying festivals.
Sorcha Kurien-Walsh is a staff writer on RIVALS, the Jilly Cooper adaptation coming soon to Disney+, starring David Tennant and Danny Dyer. She has also participated in a writers room for an upcoming Netflix show, has several original projects in development and is currently on the BBC Pilot scheme. (Sorcha is also, of course, one of the titular Messy Women).
With backgrounds in TV development, theatre and prose, Sorcha and Daniel have interesting perspectives on 'breaking in' from both sides of the industry. We'll be asking them about their careers to date that got them these opportunities, to give us the inside scoop on what a day in the writers' room looks like, how it works when a show is shooting, and to share and tips and advice they have for aspiring writers looking to follow in their footsteps.
The Q&A will be followed by drinks and 'networking' in the bar upstairs.
