Torn from their scandalous world of high seas piracy and languishing in Benjamin Hornigold’s brig, a group of captured pirates are trapped, sailing to the Bristol courts where certain death awaits them. Never ones to accept defeat, the pirates, amid their drinking, fighting, and storytelling, dream up fantastical escape plans. When a rebellious crew member is thrown into their cell the pirates feel their fantasies may just come true...
Pirates have been mythologised throughout the centuries for their brutal violence, but the surprisingly progressive lifestyle they led is often forgotten. While British and Spanish empires committed untold atrocities in their ‘new world’, these friends of no nation were championing society based on total democracy, equality, and freedom. This play explores the myth, reality and politics of pirates by combining real historical sources with naturalistic fiction and a touch of the supernatural. With shaky candle-like lighting and rousing sea shanties, the audience will find themselves immersed in a dark, complex world below decks.
